OPENING DOORS DINNER
APRIL 10, 2014
BENEFITING MHMR OF
MHMR Visions hosted its 7th annual Opening Doors Dinner at Joe T. Garcia’s on April 10. As the foundation for MHMR of Tarrant County, MHMR Visions raises funds and fosters community support for crucial MHMR programs. Thanks to our generous donors and volunteers, this year’s dinner has been the best event yet. We had more event sponsors, more guests, more auction items, and raised over 30% more than last year.
One goal of the dinner is to educate the public about the vital role MHMR plays in our community. This year, a graduate from MHMR’s Slate Street program spoke about his experience with chronic homelessness.
“I can’t tell you how much MHMR has changed my life,” Dominique said. “Housing is key. If you don’t have a place to lay your head, you can’t focus on anything else.”
Thanks to the support Dominique received from MHMR, he is living in an apartment and focusing on going back to school and getting a job.
At the end of the evening, the 2014 Opening Doors Leader Award was presented to Commissioner Roy C. Brooks. Commissioner Brooks has had a long public service career. In 2007, he established a Blue Ribbon Task Force on Health Care for the Homeless. He has also been a leader in the effort to create a central resource center to make chronic homelessness a rare, short-term and non-recurring experience in our community.
